Ideas in Life DesignIdeas in Life Design After my last meeting with Jason, the product manager from a web analytics company, I felt a bit rudderless. Going into the meeting I thought that I had nailed down my desired job title which gave me a sense of direction in my job pursuit. However the more he talked about product management (specifically in the context of software) the less appealing it became. This...

What Product Management Really Means and How Clueless I WasWhat Product Management Really Means and How Clueless... Last Saturday I grabbed some coffee with Jason Evanish (@evanish) a bright, dare i say wise, product manager from KISSmetrics (think of a supercharged version of google analytics giving you better information about user experience). Jason Shen, who is also a superstart but I have yet to meet, hooked the meeting up after learning about my interest in product management. Some...

This week’s Brand Old Sample is from Screaming Jay Hawkins. The record is called “I Put a Spell On You.” You should recognize this record because DJ premier used the sample for the unforgettable Biggie track “Kick in the Door.”

The rules: On a weekly basis I bless you with a classic cut that has been sampled. More likely you will recognize the remake but be unfamiliar with the original source material. So… I connect the dots fo’ ya.

Yesterday Was Nice (Official Video)

Category : Music Videos, NW Music, Youtube

A super “Brilly” video from the homie GMK which features Royce the Choice and Young Murph. Thumbs up my friend, way way up.

If you don’t know him yet it is high time that you did. GMK grew up in Seattle and has been making music from the young age of… Actually I can’t remember now. I think it was 5 or 8. He has been producing for almost as long. GMK followed in the footsteps of his older brother Johnny Magnum who is also a producer/MC.

I am really proud to see how far GMK has come since he first shared his music with me in middle school. Even though GMK currently resides in LA I am going to put this video in the NW music category because he is a 206 native. GMK  has an excellent blog which he updates regularly so check him out there too.

Theophilus London - I Want You Mixtape

Download I Want You

I have only played this album once through but it is a jammer. I know that much.

Picture Prince having an illegitimate baby with Kid Cudi. Now pretend their kid grew up listening to 808′s and Heartbreak everyday of his life. This mixtape sounds like that.

I could go into detail and give a proper review of this mixtape. I would talk about how it is charmingly un-groomed and has the fierce experimentation of Mos Def. How Theo’s mediacore voice and unassuming melodies produce powerful records that are vivid with feeling but remain simple.

But, I am not going to try to distill the whole album into a few sentences or try to fit the man into a box. I am hoping you will do that for me. Download this album, and share what you think of it.

Below is some in studio footage courtesy of Vashtie Kola who also plays “host” to the mixtape.

Jake One x Stussy – Town Biz

Town Biz Jake One

Download Town Biz Here

Yesterday I told you about the new Seattle Stussy store. Today I share a special downloadable treat from Stussy x Jake One called Town Biz.

You wont find any new or unreleased tracks here. No, no. no. Rather, this mixtape takes us back on a journey to Seattle’s early hip hop scene.

I am not going to pretend like I know all of the artists on this tape. I would be ultra fronting if I tried to explain who  Walt Nut is or how he was relevant to the 206 scene. But thats not the point I am trying to make, and that is not why this is an important collection of music.

This mixtape is a beatuful bridge between the artists of “back then” and todays talent who have roots to the Seattle’s C.D. and the South end. Artists such as GMK, Dyme Def, Macklemore, and D-Black. The track list even develops as such starting in 1990 and moving into the present. If nothing else it shows fans my age and younger what Seattle was and what it has become.

For any one who claims to follow and support local hip hop, this mixtape is a classic history lesson. I appreciate Jake One’s work in digging up songs of of old cassette tapes and digitizing them. Some of the tracks aren’t even stereo. A few days back on twitter I caught Vitamin D write @ Jake One

@JakeUno i’m so mad at u for trackin your mixtape in mono! u know i would’ve put a mix on that fatal track! smh.

I have been listening to this mixtape a lot lately and I know that you will enjoy it too. Whether you are from Seattle or not you will find this mixtape to be important in documenting and sharing Seattle Hip Hop.

For more background one the mixtape check out this Seattle Times Interview with Jake One About the new Mixtape.

Stüssy Opens in Downtown Seattle

Stussy Town Biz Grand Opening Promotion

I have never been one to post much about fashion, but I felt it necessary to promote the opening of a new store from a legendary brand. Tomorrow, Friday April 30th, a new Stüssy boutique is opening in downtown Seattle directly next to Goods. This marks their forth US store opening within 2 years. They have 60 stores worldwide.

I remember on my last trip to LA walking into a Stussy store with Sebino and not knowing quite what to expect. My friend Sebino is what I would call a street-wear connoisseur and stays fresh in it always. I didn’t want to look a n00b so I had to pretend like I stayed up on it. But guys, i’m definitely not up on it. Continue Reading
