The Secret to Downloading Free Music Directly Thru Firefox

Category : Technology

If you follow these directions you will be able to download free content from many streaming music sites. My favorite to use is grooveshark.com. Unlike other streaming music sites like pandora or last.fm which play random music by theme, grooveshark lets you play any artist or song on demand.

To get started just follow these 6 quick and easy steps.

1. For this to work you must have mozzilla firefox running on your computer  your. You will also need to download the free firefox add-on called Video Download Helper which you can google to find or check out my link. The install will require a restart of the browser. After the browser has restarted you will notice an icon next to the address bar that looks like a bunch of gray ballons.

2. Next visit Grooveshark.com because this will be our source to download free streaming music. (Since writing this post I have discovered Dizzler.com which works better than grooveshark cause all their songs download in mp3.)

3. Find any song, album, or artist you want to download by entering the name into the  big search field on the page. I am searching “Vampire Weekend” as an example.

4. After entering your search you will receive a list of results. The more specific you make the search the better.

5. Click one of these songs to start playback. While the song is playing you should notice that the download helper icon has turned from gray to multi colored as seen below. This means that the currently playing track (once fully buffered) is ready to download to your computer.

6. To download this track click on the little down arrow just left of the icon. A selection of files drop down. The track currently playing or last played is the last item on the list. Click this item to quickly download the song to your desktop.

The name of the file may not match the name of the song which you want to download. Don’t be worried. They don’t always match. Sometimes the file name is a string of numbers or complete random gibberish, but trust that your song is there.

That is it! Your favorite songs are just a search away. One note: the ability to download the song depends on the song’s format. If the file type is .mp3 than you are golden. You will often come across file types that can not be downloaded to your computer. Uncompatible file types include .mpeg and .flv.

The above tutorial works just as well on macs or pcs. However, download helper offers some additional functionality to convert some file types. From flv to mp3 for example or from flv to mpeg4. In my experience these conversions are much more complicated to do when using my mac but easy on a PC. If you are using a PC then from the drop down list next to the Download Helper icon hover over the file until you see additional download options appear. From these options choose “download and convert” and follow the directions.

More detailed directions are available on the download helper official website.

Vampire Weekend = Paul Simon

Paul Simon

Vampire Weekend

Let me state the obvious if you could not tell by the title of this post or the two videos above: Vampire Weekend sounds like Paul Simon. Paul Simon is an artists that I heard a lot growing up because my baby sitter was a former hippie chick that kept him on reply while she laid on her bean bag chair and got lifted.

The tribal syncopation of Vampire Weekend’s drums, the pure lifted falsetto voice, and the upbeat melodies are distinctly modern African jazz/rock fusion. Fela Kuti, from my father’s home of Nigeria, embodies this style.

I heard so much of this music growing up I feel it is damn near in my DNA. When I heard the sounds of Vampire Weekend and connected it to Paul Simon all of the early association I have with it came flooding back.

Vampire Weekend is genius for bringing this sound to modern alternative rock and I am surprised no one has done it sooner. I am going to attempt this weekend to bring the sounds and syncopation to a hip hop structure.

Or you guys feeling the African/Paul Simon sound or am I alone in this? Has any other rock group gone borrowed so heavily from this genre that I am overlooking?

Scribes + Sound Dialect

ScribesAndSD

Scribes is in the wrap up stages of his album and is looking for one more song to cap it. A fact that shook me up because I haven’t yet secured any Sound Dialect beats LP and I couldn’t NOT be on Scribe’s next project. After all I made a major contributions to his Sleepwalk album producing 5/12 tracks on the CD.

I got the man in the studio tonight and we did a proper listening session. Even though it has been more than 2 years since Sleepwalk dropped we still have that special chemistry. We share much of the same influences and we often hear songs with the same ear.

Sitting down together sharing music prompted the song association game which took us all over the internet. Youtube mostly.

One track I showed him sounded like an Atmosphere record performed on Jimmy Kimmel. Which took us in search of the the original sample source to “Say Hey There.” After Scribes heard a beat I made sampling a Motown record he pointed out how early Stevie Wonder records sound Wu-Tang esque.

By the end of he listening session I was excited to see where things could go. We have both matured a lot as artists from his last album. Scribes left me with a list of 10 tracks that caught his ear. Stay tuned my friends. I will keep you informed as this collabo matures.
